Numbering art

Numbering art - about the technique.

I was wondering, many times, how could I count the movements I make while painting and I ran into the answer when  I came across a vintage numbering machine in a cupboard. An idea occurred to me that I can use it to paint and count the number of the movements I make at the same time. A bit later I had over a dozen numberers which I use in my work.

This way of painting allows me to find out how many movements, of my hand, needs a painting to be finished, without having counting them personally. This makes the process of counting more objective, the numbering machine counts while I am free to paint.

I start each canvas as I would begin any other painting. Depending on the size of the details I paint, I use one digit only for the smaller ones or I use the whole surface of the stamp, namely the all five digits, to cover a bigger area. Usually, there is no specific order, the process is pretty similar to painting with a brush, but when the painting is ready it is counted out, too.
